Hello Resident
West Midlands Police (WMP) often issues warnings through WMnow in February to coincide with Valentine's Day. These alerts typically focus on romance fraud and night-out safety.
Romance Fraud Alerts Referred to as "The Heartbreak Scam," these messages target users on dating apps and social media. Sample Alert: "With Valentine's Day approaching, scammers are increasingly active... They build emotional bonds with victims before asking for money". Red Flags: Moving the conversation off the dating app quickly, claiming to work abroad, and requesting money for an "emergency" or travel. WMP Advice: Never send money, share bank details, or take out loans for someone you have not met in person. Use Google Images or TinEye to perform a reverse image search on profile photos.
"Safer Nights Out" Samples For those planning dates or celebrations, the Safer Nights Out campaign provides practical tips: Drink Spiking: "Never leave your drink unattended or accept them from strangers... Keep an eye on your drink whether it's alcoholic or not". Dating Safety: "Ask for Angela" at the bar if you feel threatened or need to get out of a date. Personal Belongings: "Do not hang bags containing your purse/wallet on the backs of chairs... keep them close to your body". Transport: Always use licensed taxis and share your live location or taxi registration with friends.
Reporting & Support Suspicious Activity: If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and report it via WMP Live Chat. Fraud: Report suspected scams to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040. Bank Concerns: If you have sent money, call 159 immediately to speak with your bank. Thank you Wednesfield & Heath Town Neighbourhood Team. | ||
